Problem opening Wordfast Classic on Mac Thread poster: Gareth Harding
|
Wordfast Classic will not open on my Mac even though I have Word 2011. The Wordfast document is in the Support Library and it appears on the Templates drop down menu in Word but when I click Ok nothing happens. The Wordfast Helpline has run out of ideas. | | | Drew MacFadyen Verenigde State Local time: 07:13 uit Spaans in Engels + ... Word, or word for MAC | Feb 15, 2011 |
Are you using MSoft word via windows emulator or virtual PC, or word for MAC? I'm also not sure if classic is compatible with 2011.

It really boils down to one thing AFAIK: whether the used version of MS Word has VBA or not. I am not aware of the fact that Word:mac with VBA would prevent WFC from working.
From the Wordfast website:
Supported Ms-Word versions are: Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002 (a.k.a. XP), Word 2003, Word 2007 32/64bits, Word 2010 32/64bits,as well as Word 98, Word 2001, Word X, Word 2004, and Word 2011 (but not Word 2008) on the MacIntosh. The better Ms-Word works (in speed, reliability etc), the better Wordfast works. Even a modest 120-Mhz Windows 95 workstation running Ms-Word 97 will do fine. For the MacIntosh, a fast processor (1 Ghz) is recommended for OSX. The ideal version of Ms-Word on a Mac is Word 2011 (in beta release as of July, 2010, but functional) See supported platforms for more detailed information on this topic.

I'm using Word 2011 for Mac as suggested by Wordfast.
Laurent, what is AFAIK and VBA and how do I check if these things are affecting WFC. (In simple language with no jargon please)

Laurent KRAULAND (X) Frankryk Local time: 13:13 uit Frans in Duits + ... Jargon :) and a question | Feb 15, 2011 |
AFAIK: as far as I know
VBA: Visual Basic for Applications, this is the programme which allows you to run Wordfast Classic as it basically is a Word macros set.
WFC: Wordfast Classic
Question:
What did the Wordfast helpline ask you to do to try running Wordfast Classic on your Mac? | | | VBA in Word 2011 | Feb 15, 2011 |
Yes, VBA is back in Word 2011 for Mac (it was removed from Word 2008 for Mac, which is why Laurent and Drew are asking about it).
Gareth, it would be helpful if you could describe what steps you have already taken. | | | How to open Wordfast Classic in Word 2011 | Feb 16, 2011 |
In Word 2011, open Templates and Add-ins on the Tools menu. Add Wordfast.dot. Make sure it is checked each time you open MS Word. Works for me. (Mac OS 10.6.4) | | | The story so far ... | Feb 17, 2011 |
The initial suggestions from the Helpline focused on making sure the wordfast.dot file was not in a zip file and that it was in the library folder for Microsoft under the right user. They also suggested that I set up a new user account and opened Wordfast and Word in that. This didn’t work.

The Helpline then suggested that I check the size of wordfast.dot in the "user templates" folder? If it's very small (like 30 KB), it may be a crippled version. The file is 4.2MB, which seem to be normal.
The Helpline told me that when Wordfast is added to the list of templates a couple of files should be created to that same folder: wordfast.ini, wordfast.cfg. This hasn’t happened on my computer.
The Helpline suggest that something is preventing wordfast.ini and wordfast.cfg from being created. They asked if I have any security programs or similar running in OS X. In addition they asked about the kind of user rights that have been given to the user account as they thought that there must be something in my OS X configuration that makes it more restrictive than a normal Mac. All I could tell them was that I have not installed any security programs and that all the user settings are as they were when I bought the Mac. This is the point we got to before they suggested that I contact a translator’s forum.
The Helpline suggested that my computer maybe too old as its version 10.5.8. They also asked if it is based on Intel or PowerPC. I don’t know the answer to this but we never got to explore the significance of this. The hard drive failed about a year ago and the shop I bought the computer from installed a new one, I doubt if this has any significance.
Thanks for spending time on this.

Hello,
I am having the very same problem in Word 2011 for Mac (OS 10.6.6) , however when I go to Templates and Add-ins, it already shows Wordfast.dot as checked... But I can't for the life of me find the WF tool bar in Word! | | | Laurent KRAULAND (X) Frankryk Local time: 13:13 uit Frans in Duits + ...
In MS Word 2007, which as I understand has a very similar layout to Word:mac 2011, there is a top ribbon with tabs. The "Add-ins" tab is for Wordfast.
Other than that, and forgive me all if I stated the obvious, I am at a loss for an explanation.
(Edited as Gareth's post was vetted after I wrote mine.)

1) Your computer is not too old (Word:mac 2011 runs on OS X 10.5.8 and newer).
2) I could not find any mention of wordfast.ini and or wordfast.cfg in the ReadMe file.
3) If there is a security setting which prevents WFC from running, it is most likely to be changed in Word itself. | | | Problem solved | Mar 2, 2011 |
After clicking tools then templates and add ins a box appears with the wordfast template ticked, at the top of the box there is a section called document template, when the templates box appears this section contains the document called: normal.dotm, if I click on attach and then click on the wordfast.dot in the templates folder followed by ok then wordfast appears on the screen with word and it can be used.
Hurray! | |

Can't open WF classic either, problem similar to Gareth's | Feb 23, 2013 |
Hi Gareth, did you at any time have a window with a "Can't load Visual Baisc for Applications" error message pop up? I have followed every indication from WF support, including all of the ones you mention and then some, deleting files, reinstalling VBA from the Office 2011 disk and even renaming my computer so there were no non-English characters either there or in the path to the wordfast.dot file, still no luck. I do have the WordFast scrolldown menu appear when I open Word and a single WF icon appears, but touch either and the error message appears again. ▲ Collapse | | | Full reinstall of Office 2011 | Feb 24, 2013 |

This (the part underlined by me) may be the cause of your problem: having migrated your setup from your old iMac to the new one, as opposed to installing it from scratch. This may work with most applications, but could have resulted in a partially broken Office 2011 setup. What you could try is uninstalling Office 2011 and reinstalling it from scratch. Hopefully, this will fix the VBA problem.
If necessary, also delete your preference files, as explained in this troubleshooting article in the knowledge base. Some other measures are also described in that article, which may be worth giving a try.

I'm not aware that you can reinstall VBA separately with Office 2011. As I said, try the full uninstall + cleanup + full reinstall. If that works, also remember to apply the latest updates for Office 2011 from Microsoft. | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Problem opening Wordfast Classic on Mac LinguaCore | AI Translation at Your Fingertips
