чисто как догадка - intermittently supported возможно используется здесь чтобы охарактеризивать все трубы установленные на опорах, т.к. чтобы отличить их от труб установленных с непрерывной поддержкой т.е. либо в коробах или на земле. в этом случае треюование к диаметру логично ибо если диаметр будет меньше, а расстояние между опорами то же, то возможны провисы и т.д.
