In telecommunication and related engineering (including computer networking and programming), the term timeout or time-out has several meanings, not very unlike those of a sporting-oriented time-out:
• A network parameter related to an enforced event designed to occur at the conclusion of a predetermined elapsed time.
• A specified period of time that will be allowed to elapse in a system before a specified event is to take place, unless another specified event occurs first; in either case, the period is terminated when either event takes place. Note: A timeout condition can be canceled by the receipt of an appropriate time-out cancellation signal.
• An event that occurs at the end of a predetermined period of time that began at the occurrence of another specified event. The timeout can be prevented by an appropriate signal.

Istek vremena se koristi da prekine proces koji je bio u očekivanju drugog očekivanog događaja. Na primer, udaljeni sistem sa biranjem brojeva može da dozvoli korisniku 60 sekundi da se prijavi posle uspostavljanja veze. Ako korisnik omaši i ne upiše ispravno prijavljeno ime i lozinku u tom roku, računar prekida vezu, štiteći se na taj način protiv provala, ali i oslobađajući tako telefonsku liniju.

: meni ova formulacija nekako zvuči kao da se radi o nekoj "default action" koja će se izvesti nakon "time-outa", no nisam sigurnaODG: razumijem sad vaše razmišljanje, logično je, a naravno, kontekst je presudan

Moguće, zato sam stavila 3. Kontekst bi pomogao; pošla sam od toga da je u pitanju informacija o trenutnom statusu/opis postupka, a ako se radi o nabrajanju funkcija onada je Vaša solucija u redu.

Hvala:) Ponekad napravim omašku. Možda bi ipak trebalo da se postavi pitanje na EN-EN, da bi bili sigurni u odgovor. Konsultovala sam se Amerikancem, stručnjakom iz ove oblasti, preko proz.com, ni on nije siguran.

- po meni bi se moglo raditi o radnji koja se automatski izvodi ako dođe do "time-outa", tj. radnji koja će se automatski, standardno (by defaut) izvesti ako istekne vrijeme čekanja

Default actions may be: ignore (drop) this context, execute an external program, feed all collected logmessages as standard input to an external program or generate a "report".

It's a great little freeware proggy which will allow you to avoid the hassle of LILO or Grub, and you can also set your Vista install as default on time-out, so if anything goes awry with your Linux install you will default boot into Vista.
