Will you give up the Internet? Jul 17, 2023

Internet pollution is a thing too...

*The carbon footprint of our gadgets, the internet and the systems supporting them account for about 3.7% of global greenhouse emissions, according to some estimates. It is similar to the amount produced by the airline industry globally, explains Mike Hazas, a researcher at Lancaster University. And these emissions are predicted to double by 2025.

*How much CO2 does the internet produce?
This sector is currently responsible for around 4% of global greenhouse gases and the large increase in its use suggests that this carbon footprint will double by 2025.

Does no-one do nuance any more?
Is it always a matter of all or nothing?
Can I maybe fly a bit, but remember trains are fun too (& go straight to city centres)?
Can I enjoy the worldwide market in fruit, but wonder whether I really, absolutely need strawberries in January?
Can I still post my drivel online, but hope that maybe the server that hosts it is powered by sunbeams or wind rather than by burning stuff?

Or are the options really only to shrug and cross our fingers (or even deny there is any kind of issue to be addressed) or ask if we want to live in a world where everyone has to give up everything?

I care a lot about the environment. I went 20 years without a car, years without air conditioning ( I need it now for health issues). But my biggest concern with flying is that Covid still exists. Haven't seen my sisters in America since 2016.

During the full-blown pandemic (2020-2021) I flew 54 times to different court interpretation assignments within the US. With vaccines and proper precautions, nothing happened (I am 71).

For local transportation, I use my bike (over 100 km/week).

COVID was not a reason to decline jobs.

Yeah selfish people paint everything in black or white as a tactic to make environmentalists give up, rather than give up a little thing here and a slightly bigger thing there. They've done a very good job so far, mainly because people don't want to make the slightest change to their lives. If you raise the subject of global heating or climate catastrophe, you're accused of being a party pooper or dinner downer.

Even the language has been coopted by the climate deniers. We originally called it global warming then changed to global heating because warming sounds too cosy. Yet when I use the term in translations, someone invariably changes it back to "warming". When I protest, they say "that's what people call it". I counter that among environmentalists, we now say "heating" to better reflect what's going on, but somehow, for the environment, the experts are not allowed to name stuff, unlike *every other specialist subject on earth*.

This is the hottest summer of our lives. It will break all records, as have all summers since the beginning of this century.
It is also the coolest summer of the rest of our lives.
I'm joining the Team for the Planet, investing some of my hard-earned cash to try to ensure a better future for my children.

Yeah, but it doesn’t have to be about flygskam and virtue signalling. Flights make up a very small part of most people’s carbon footprint.

Of course, our work enables international trade. Arguably we should start there…

The black or white tactic is not limited to the 'make no change' team. To me, the question 'Have you given up flying?' is as black or white as it gets. Asking 'Have you reduced your flying?' would be much more inviting and encourage a more valuable exchange of ideas and observations.

That's 3 cents from a person who's only used air travel twice for a quick family outing to Rome 4 years ago so has little to reduce in the flying department.

I am not vegan either. As a ´flexitarian´ eat a lot of vegetarian food, but have not given up entirely on dairy and a little meat now and then.

I admit that travel is the way I contribute most to CO2 emissions, and I travel a lot. Driving to the UK via Germany and the Netherlands is probably not more climate friendly than flying, but since the ferry from Denmark was discontinued, that is the only practical way to take large items with us that we cannot have on a plane.

However, I try to save where I can. My clothing budget is minimal, and we try to eat local or home-grown vegetables, saving on plastic, packaging and so on, and recycling or simply not consuming more than we need for most of the year.

Where I live, public transport is useless, so we also drive quite a lot to look after elderly relatives, and we do allow ourselves to visit a museum, meet friends or take a holiday now and then.

Without fanatically dropping anything completely, I do try to cut down all round on unnecessary consumption and emissions.

Given up flying? Jul 19, 2023

I have given up flying on British Airways. I try to stick to Japan Airlines, ANA, Cathay Pacific or a Middle Eastern airline.
I used to fly to London via BA and then onto Europe, Eastern Europe, Russia and the Middle East. Now I fly Lufthansa from Boston to Frankfurt or Swiss to Zurich and use these cities as jumping off points. Japan Airlines is hands down the best on the planet.
